S1E5: Lust & Pride

Tuesday, September 1, 2020

Welcome to S1E5 of Martha's Talk!
In today's episode, we are going to speak about the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. While some know me as Tasha, God changed my name to Martha. He also called me to be an Apostle. This simply means, that he commissioned me to go wherever he sends me to preach or teach the gospel, in truth and in love. Martha's Talk is a talk show in which I share the love of Christ for humanity, in Spirit and in Truth.

In today's episode we are going to go over:

  • Free will & Self-Control
  • What is the lust of the flesh?
  • What is the lust of the eyes?
  • What is the pride of the eyes?
  • How does the demonic spirit of lust (materialism and sexual lust) work together to destroy the family structure?
  • How does the demonic spirit of lust, and the pride of life, contribute to low-self esteem, insecurities, and a culture of pride (pride = It's my party, I can do what I want to)
    • Sex & Purity: Can people really date without lust?
    • How do we overcome the lust of the flesh (materialism), the lust of the eyes (sexual)  and the pride of life (self-will)?
    Focus Text:
    • In 1 John 2:15-17 the Apostle John tells us "Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever."
Q&A: When did God give us free-will? When did God give us self-control?
    • Genesis 2:15-20 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
    • Genesis 3:1-10 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,  but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.  Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
    • Self control
      • 1 Corinthians 10:13 "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
      • Galatians 5:22-23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
      • 2 Timothy 1:6-7 " For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.  For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
      • 2 Peter 1:5-7 "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love."
What is the lust of the flesh?
    • Sinful lust (including material lust)
      • Galatians 5:19-21 The acts of the flesh are obvious:
        • Flesh: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
        • Idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions,
        • Factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.
      • I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
      • Matthew 6:23-24 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
      • 1 Timothy 6:9-10 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
      • Ephesians 2:1-3 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
      • 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."
Q&A: What is the lust of the eyes?
    • Sexual lust
      • Matthew 5:27-30 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.  And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."

Q&A: What is the pride of life?

    • Choosing to do what you will, over what God will
    • James 4:1-10 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Q&A: How does the demonic spirit of lust (materialism and sexual lust) work together to destroy the family structure.
    • People are never satisfied!
    • Selfish, what can someone offer me.
Q&A: How does individual pride contribute to low self-esteem, insecurities, and a culture of pride (see below)?
    • Selfish, what can someone offer me.
    • It creates an environment of hate, in which people do not care about what they say or do to others.
    • No room for truth, God's truth!
Q&A: Believers and sinners, who choose the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, do not have peace & rest in their heart and mind. Here's why:

The Holy Spirit communicates to born-again believers by letting them know that they are outside of God's will or about to sin via peace and rest:

    • Philippians 4:6-8  Peace
    • Matthew 11:28-30 Rest
    • If any of #1-#3 below applies to you, that means that you are outside of God's will in one area of your life, and the Holy Spirit is wanting you to change. Note: God is very gentle, and loving. He loves you, and does not want you to become anxious or afraid because you've made a mistake. Rather, he wants you to be contrite, and learn.
      • #1. If you have thoughts, feelings, and emotions clouding your mind and heart, at any point.
        • God created our mind to be completely free from intruding, unwelcoming thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
      • #2. If you have to try to avoid thinking negative thoughts, or ungodly thoughts or try to replace negative thoughts with Godly thoughts.
      • #3. If unclean thoughts just pop up, and you know that it is not from you, nor is it from God.
The Holy Spirit communicates to those who do not believe in Jesus Christ (sinners):
    1. John 16:7-15 The Holy Spirit convicts the world (not saints) under three circumstances:
    • Sin - because the world does not believe in Jesus Christ
    • Righteousness - because Jesus Christ is with the Father, and will no longer be seen by the world
    • Judgement - because the ruler of the world is judged
    Q&A: Sex & Purity
    • Is it possible, for a believer to live pure (free from lust),  even in 2020 and beyond?
Q&A: How do we overcome the lust of the flesh (materialism), the lust of the eyes (sexual)  and the pride of life (self-will)?
    • #1. Be born-again
      •  Click here to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
    • #2. Walk by the Spirit - Galatians 5:16
      • We walk by the Spirit by reading the word of God on a daily basis/
      • We walk by the Spirit by believing that Jesus Christ, the grace of God, the Holy Spirit, and the word of God are enough to transform our lives
      • We walk by the Spirit by believing that the word of God, is true over cultural norms and how we feel, and what we think.
    • #3. Understand why we have the Holy Spirit
      • The Holy Spirit main goals is to get us to be full of him.
      • When we are full of him and overflowing with him then we will have the fruit of the Holy Spirit in us, at all times. - Galatians 5:22-26
      • Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
What must I do to have a relationship with Jesus Christ?
